Common Defects of Space Heaters
Space heaters, like all products, may be defective for numerous reasons. Common reasons that personal heaters may be defective are:
- Inferior materials: If products are made of flammable materials or contain parts which can’t withstand high temperatures, it may lead to parts melting while the products are being used.
- Faulty design: Products have faulty designs if they have flaws in their designs which make it difficult to operate the products safely. As an example, a space heater may lack an on/off switch, making the only way to shut the product off unplugging it. This may lead to electrical wiring problems which could start fires or pose an electrical shock hazard.
- Lack of safety mechanisms: Products without automatic shutoff mechanisms or ways to warn users when overheating happens may injure people.
- Lack of appropriate gates and guards: Products without adequate valves which make sure chemicals and fumes don’t leak out can lead to a high risk of death or severe injury. An example is a case involving Mr. Heater propane heaters which was reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
- Lack of adequate instructions or warnings: Some space heaters might work as they are designed but aren’t safe because they lack proper instructions or warnings. If a user isn’t aware of the way the product works, and isn’t aware of the product’s hidden dangers, they might get injured.
Space heater defects can lead to fires whether you use the heaters only once in a blue moon or if you use them regularly as your primary home heating appliance. Call us today for a free consultation if a space heater defect led to a fire which injured or killed you or a loved one.
