Roblox Lawsuit 2025 Updates
December 20, 2024 Update
A lawsuit has been filed by a California woman which claims that Fortnite and Roblox are intentionally marketed to and designed for minors, with very little regard for possible risks the games pose to the health of children, including adverse effects such as cognitive decline and possible brain damage. The lawsuit claims the games were marketed without the implementation of simple safety features.
The lawsuit was filed on December 13 in California on behalf of a mother and her son, who is 12 years old.
The lawsuit is seeking compensation from Epic Games and Roblox Corporation, claiming the games have been designed with features which encourage addictive behavior and harm children, as well as exploitative monetization which targets minors. The lawsuit claims this leads to significant financial, mental and physical harm, such as in-game purchases which are excessive.
The lawsuit alleges the games caused the 12-year-old to become addicted to video games, leading to mental health issues such as social isolation, emotional distress, withdrawal symptoms like emotional outbursts, anger and rage, and less interest in other hobbies.
The lawsuit is alleging numerous causes of action, including strict product liability, negligence, intentional misrepresentation and violations of California's unfair competition law.
May 15, 2024 Update
A lawsuit was filed on May 3 in Minnesota alleging that Apple and Roblox Corporation designed Roblox intentionally to cause children who play Roblox to become addicted to it.
The lawsuit, filed by a 14-year-old boy's parents, alleges that the boy spent around 6,000 hours playing the game, and spent large amounts of money on in-game purchases and Robux. The lawsuit claims the boy primarily plays on Apple devices.
The lawsuit claims the boy has been diagnosed with video game addiction, ADHD and depression, and has needed specialized tutoring and education, medication and outpatient counseling.
February 22, 2024 Update
Roblox is the subject of a new class action lawsuit which alleges it is designed to hurt children with deceptive commercial advertising and addictive conduct. The lawsuit also alleges that Roblox Corporation is exploiting child labor.
What Is Roblox?
Roblox is a platform for online gaming which Roblox Corporation created. It lets users create games as well as play games which others develop. The platform had in excess of 217 million people using it per month by 2024, and over half of its users were under 13.
It is known for sandbox-style gameplay and lets gamers build, explore and interact with virtual worlds utilizing items and customizable avatars.
Revenue is generated by the platform via in-game purchases of Robux, its virtual currency. This lets users purchase in-game items like upgrades, accessories and skins.
Roblox’s features and offerings are frequently updated. Limited-time events and reward systems are employed to make sure users are kept engaged.
The platform is extremely popular among young people. However, concerns regarding addictive features, potential for gaming excessively, and psychological tactics have led to Roblox Corporation being the subject of numerous lawsuits.
Allegations Against Roblox
Roblox lawsuits are based on claims that Roblox was designed intentionally to foster video game addiction, especially in young people.
Plaintiffs are claiming that Roblox Corporation has employed psychological manipulation which includes in-game purchases, reward systems and addictive gameplay mechanics in order to encourage excessive spending and prolonged engagement.
Parents are alleging that these choices in design are prioritizing profits over the well-being of players, leading to emotional distress, financial losses and psychological harm in young people.
Lawsuits are also claiming that Roblox Corporation did not provide proper warnings regarding risks which are associated with prolonged gaming and addictive gameplay.
Why is Roblox So Addictive?
Roblox is addictive for many reasons, including:
- Dopamine rushes: Roblox might stimulate releases of dopamine, which is part of the reward system of the human body. When players experience a rush of pleasure while playing Roblox, they end up seeking additional releases of dopamine, causing addiction.
- Reward systems and psychological tactics: The game leverages peer comparison and reward systems to encourage young users to play it compulsively. An addictive thrill is created by variable reward systems involving unpredictable prizes. Social comparison, involving team-based challenges, in-game achievements and customizable avatars, leads to young users desiring to compete with their peers and becoming emotionally invested.
- Endless gameplay: Unlike some games, Roblox does not have any definitive end. This encourages excessive gameplay.
- Fear of missing out and frequent updates: The game’s time-sensitive content and frequent updates lead to a significant fear of missing out. Exclusive item drops, challenges and events encourage users to regularly log in to not miss out on rewards, making sure users stay committed to Roblox.
- Customization and social pressures: The platform thrives on customization options, which let users personalize virtual spaces and avatars. Peers desire to showcase their rare items or unique styles, leading to more in-game purchases. Players are compelled to stay engaged by social pressures from team-based activities and peer interactions.
- Community involvement and competitive gameplay: The platform leads to competitiveness via collaborative challenges, leaderboards and community-driven content and this keeps players very engaged. The features encourage users to spend significant amounts of time enhancing their social standing and in-game achievements.
Roblox and Microtransactions
While Roblox is free, microtransactions are encouraged, and they cultivate a cycle of spending in kids.
According to a 2022 study, there is a clear relationship between gambling disorder and microtransactions, with evidence suggesting that the reason for this may be that loot boxes have a gambling-like nature. The study claims that evidence suggests that young people who buy loot boxes might be at a higher risk of ending up with gambling disorder.
Roblox is a platform featuring microtransactions, and its microtransactions may foster addiction in much the same way that gambling does.
How Roblox Cultivates an Unsafe Environment
While Roblox has been celebrated because it can foster creativity as well as connection among users, it has a darker side which has led to countless young people being harmed. Families around the country are coming forward with tales of how predators have infiltrated Roblox.
Roblox has let harmful behaviors spread on its platform for years. Recent updates to safety, which came in November 2024, only came after many years of public outcry and harrowing incidents.
Children have been exploited by predators on Roblox. The exploitation, coercion and grooming occurred via private messages and in-game chats.
Predators have used Roblox to lure children into communication channels which are private, and this has, in some cases, led to real-world danger.
Predatory interactions have led to trauma, depression and anxiety.
The safety updates in November 2024 included stronger parental controls, restricted communication, content ratings and activity limitations. However, the updates came far too late – the platform was released in 2006 and countless children were harmed prior to the safety updates, which should have come far sooner.
Call us today for a free consultation if your child has been groomed or sexually assaulted by a predator who was met via Roblox.

Evidence in a Roblox Lawsuit
Evidence to collect in a Roblox lawsuit may include:

- Mental and medical health records: These records may show treatment and diagnosis of addiction as well as conditions like ADHD, depression or anxiety.
- Use logs: Playing time logs, like screenshots which show duration and frequency of sessions.

A lawyer at our firm can also hire expert witnesses who can testify about Roblox’s addictive features and how the platform can cause users, especially young users, to behave compulsively. We can also present regulatory findings and studies which support the allegation that the platform’s features are intentionally addictive and target teens and children.
How Much Is a Roblox Lawsuit Settlement Worth?
Multiple lawsuits have been settled regarding Roblox. This includes a class action settlement worth $10 million regarding content deletion, as well as another class action lawsuit which alleged gambling by minors.
Roblox agreed on paying $10 million in order to settle some claims that content that children purchased was deleted without notification or refund. The settlement ended up crediting the virtual currency known as Robux back to eligible users’ accounts.
Roblox also had a class action lawsuit filed against it which alleged it let minors gamble utilizing Robux. It was claimed by the lawsuit that Roblux profited from charging 30 percent to gambling websites to change Robux into cash.
However, we cannot provide a number as to the average Roblox settlement. The value of your claim will depend on the individual circumstances in your case. Factors which will affect the value of your case may include:
