Why Are Families Suing Roblox?

- Multiple criminal indictments have alleged that predators have groomed children on Roblox, ranging from eight to 14 years old, then traded sexual content with them, raped them or kidnapped them
- Hindenburg Research created a fake Roblox account, set its age to under 13, then searched for the word “adult” in Roblox – this led them to a group named “Adult Studios” that had 3,334 members who openly traded child pornography and solicited sexual acts from children. Tracking members of this group led to Hindenburg Research finding 38 Roblox groups, including one with a total of 103,000 members, openly trading child porn and soliciting sexual favors.
- Chatrooms which traded child porn on Roblox did not have age restrictions.

The girl allegedly trusted the man due to his status as a successful game developer on the platform. The man allegedly told a reporter that predators and pedophiles are drawn to Roblox since it is easy to create accounts on the platform.
- Condo games and inappropriate content: “Condo games” have been a problem on Roblox. These games may expose children to simulated sex, crude language and naked figures. These games may be written in code which is able to bypass the platform’s safety filters. Users have coded games which allow for characters in the games to have sex while naked. According to CBS News, users of these games have been seen attempting to lure children found in these games into private conversations in different apps.
- Lack of moderation: Prior to Roblox’s November 2024 safety updates, harmful content and predatory behavior was allowed to exist on the platform for long periods of time.
According to Bloomberg, at least 24 people, since 2018, have been arrested in the United States, accused of abusing or abducting victims they groomed or met on Roblox. Some of these people who were arrested had already been accused of abusing children or were already on sex offender lists.
How Roblox Facilitated Child Exploitation
Roblox facilitated child abuse in numerous ways:

- Lack of content moderation allowed children to be exposed to lewd and inappropriate content

Roblox, which was released in 2006, only ended up enabling safety features in November 2024 in response to public outcry. These safety features included:
- Activity limitations: A ban was placed on features involving drawing or free-form writing for users under the age of 13.
- Content ratings: Games got categorized by their intensity and restrictions were added for younger users.
- Restricted communication: Direct messages for kids under the age of 13 were prohibited unless they are approved by the users’ parents.
- Stronger parental controls: This included activity approvals, time limits and remote account management.
