Is Nexplanon in a Lawsuit?

Nexplanon is a birth control implant containing progestin. The device is the size of a matchstick and is implanted just under the skin of the arm. Tiny amounts of etonogestrel, or synthetic progestin, are slowly released by the implant.

A recent case report published in BMJ Case Reports described an “extremely rare case” of a contraceptive implant migrating from a woman’s upper arm into her left lung.

The U.K.-based woman, who is in her 30s, consulted with physicians after she noticed she couldn’t feel the implant in her arm where it had been placed six years prior.

Doctors, after doing imaging tests, found the original procedure wasn’t done correctly, leading to the implant becoming dislodged and moving into a vein in the arm.

The implant then moved into her heart, and them moved through an artery into her lung, where it was found by the imaging.

A 2017 study found that 38 implant migration cases were reported to the FDA from 2006 through 2015.

The woman allegedly suffered severe bleeding due to Nexplanon.
