Safety Tips To Avoid Automobile Accidents During The Holidays

Published: November 5, 2009

The holidays are an incredibly busy time on America’s roads. Every year, thousands of people hit the nation’s highways to visit loved ones in other states. This volume makes roads potentially dangerous, but with some basic safety, one can avoid an awful automobile accident.

Failing To Prepare Is Preparing To Fail

It may sound cliché, but this is very true for holiday driving. Preparing yourself and your automobile are excellent ways to prevent automobile accidents on the holiday roads.

First, make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Get your brakes checked and make sure all of your signal lights are working properly. If you’re going to be driving through snow or icy conditions, make sure you car has snow tires installed.

Make sure to give yourself ample time to make your trip. Take an extra day off from work if necessary. Rushing can very easily lead to unsafe driving and accidents.

Also, make sure you are well-rested before setting out on your trip. Many automobile accidents on the highways during holidays are due to tired drivers.

Defensive Driving To Prevent Automobile Accidents

Following a couple of basic tips from driver’s ed can be a great way to stay safe on the roads.

Keeping an eye out for the other guy is always a good idea. While much of driving is based on knowing that the other driver is going to do what he is supposed to do, it does not hurt to be cautious.

If someone is driving erratically, stay away from him. If he seems potentially dangerous, reporting him to authorities may save you or someone else from an accident.

Always leave yourself an “out.” Avoid getting boxed in by other cars, large trucks, or road barriers. Having a cushion of space between you and other cars or an exit in some direction may save you from an accident.

Use good judgment and enjoy your drive. If you do find yourself in an accident this holiday season, contact the car accident specialists at Nadrich & Cohen.
