What Is the Volvo Brake Failure Recall About?
11,469 battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles were recalled because their brakes may experience a total loss of their braking capabilities if they coast downhill for 1 minutes and 40 seconds or more without pedal application while in one of the following regenerative braking modes:
- “B” mode in PHEVs
- One-pedal driving in BEVs
The source of the problem is an installed software update which corrected a separate issue that prevented the vehicles’ backup cameras from displaying images.
The defect has already led to one serious incident, which was captured on video.
Owners have been advised by Volvo to not drive their cars and to disable regenerative braking until their vehicle’s software version is updated with a recall remedy.
