$45 Million Walmart Weighted Groceries Settlement
On June 28, 2024, final approval was given for a $45 million class action settlement in a lawsuit which alleged that Walmart let customers buy weighted groceries for a larger amount than the lowest prices advertised in-store. The lawsuit claimed that Walmart used three deceptive tactics resulting in customers paying more than advertised for seafood, poultry, meats and some produce.
Those eligible for the lawsuit were those who bought bagged citrus and weighted goods in person at Walmart stores from October 19, 2018 to January 19, 2024.
“Weighted goods” referred to sold-by-weight meat, poultry, pork and seafood products. “Bagged citrus” referred to organic oranges, tangerines, grapefruit and navel oranges sold in mesh or plastic bags.
The lawsuit alleged that Walmart’s machines would artificially raise the weight of sold-by-weight products when marked at discounted “rollback” prices, causing total prices to exceed advertised discounts.
Walmart also allegedly promoted and advertised bagged produce weights which exceeded actual product weights, leading to Walmart shoppers paying more per ounce.
Products which were sold-by-weight on clearance with reduced-price stickers also allegedly had discrepancies between advertised prices and the prices customers paid.
Approved claimants without receipts or proofs of purchase were eligible for cash payments of up to $25 in the lawsuit. Approved claimants with receipts or proofs of purchase were eligible for cash payments of up to $500 in the lawsuit.
$10 Million Walmart Money Transfer Fraud Settlement
On June 20, 2025, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that Walmart was ordered to pay $10 million to settle FTC charges that it ignored scammers using its in-store money transferring services to steal hundreds of millions of dollars from consumers in the United States.
According to the Director of the Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, companies who provide money transfer services need to train employees to comply with laws and strive to protect consumers.
A June 2022 FTC complaint claimed that from 2013 through 2018, Walmart let scammers use its money transfer services to defraud consumers out of money. The complaint alleged that Walmart’s conduct included:
- Failing to implement effective anti-fraud procedures and policies
- Failing to properly train employees
- Failing to warn customers about possible money transfer-related fraud
$7.5 Million Walmart Hazardous Waste Disposal Settlement
On October 22, 2024, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a $7.5 million settlement with Walmart, according to a California Department of Justice press release. The settlement resolved allegations that Walmart unlawfully disposed of medical waste and hazardous waste from Walmart facilities throughout the state into municipal landfills.
The settlement resulted from more than 70 waste audits conducted from 2015 through 2021. The audits involved reviewing contents of waste sent by Walmart to municipal landfills. The audits found thousands of containers of liquid wastes and toxic aerosols including:
- Rust removers
- Spray paints
- Pesticides
- Bleach
- Medical waste, like over-the-counter drugs
These unlawful disposals were alleged to violate the:
- Unfair Competition Law
- Medical Waste Management Act
- Hazardous Waste Control Law
$40,000 Walmart Disability Discrimination Settlement
In 2020, Walmart agreed to pay $40,000 to resolve a lawsuit over disability discrimination.
The disability discrimination lawsuit involved a woman born with a right arm which ends at her elbow.
When it came time for the woman to take a Physical Assessment Test when applying for a freight handler position with Walmart, the woman was allegedly asked twice if she needed help completing the test.
The woman allegedly declined both offers, saying she could lift up to 150 pounds. The woman was allegedly not allowed to take the test without an unnecessary assistive device.
According to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, this conduct violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA prohibits employers from not hiring applicants due to disability.
$40,000 was awarded to the woman, and Walmart was also required to train human resources personnel and managers at the offending location on treating disabled applicants throughout the hiring process, as well as the role of reasonable accommodations via the ADA.
$123 Million Walmart Opioid Shareholder Lawsuit
In 2024, a $123 million settlement was reached in a lawsuit involving Walmart.
In 2009, Walmart’s pharmacies went through a DEA investigation about compliance with the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
In 2011, Walmart agreed to a settlement with the DEA which required Walmart to make changes to ensure compliance with the CSA.
The lawsuit leading to the $123 million settlement alleged that Walmart’s board wasn’t monitoring the company’s CSA compliance, and that Walmart and its board were placing profits over compliance. It was alleged that Walmart’s board knew of red flags regarding non-compliance.

In June 2024, a press release from the State of New Jersey’s Department of Law and Public Safety announced that Walmart agreed to pay $1.64 million in order to resolve claims that it repeatedly practiced unlawful pricing practices at stores in New Jersey.
The lawsuit alleged that Walmart used inaccurate unit pricing for certain groceries sold in New Jersey.
New Jersey’s Unit Pricing Disclosure Act (UPDA) requires grocers to display prices using standard units of measurement, such as price per ounce, price per 100 sheets, etc.
It was alleged that over 2,000 instances were found of Walmart stores in New Jersey using incorrect units of measurement. In addition, it was alleged that different units of measurement were commonly used within the same merchandise category, making it difficult to impossible for shoppers to properly compare prices.
$54 Million Walmart Truck Driver Settlement
In 2016, truck drivers were awarded $54 million by a jury who decided that Walmart intentionally failed to pay them the minimum wage.
The lawsuit alleged that Walmart failed to pay the truck drivers for activities which included washing and inspecting their trucks, as well as for layovers. Walmart had argued that the drivers got paid for activities including those tasks, and that the drivers weren’t working during layovers.
