Are OneWheels Dangerous?
Yes. Like electric scooters, OneWheels are dangerous. Future Motion’s Onewheel Skateboards, such as the OneWheel GT Electric Skateboards, are dangerous because of a feature known as the “pushback” feature.
Pushback is a safety feature which lets riders know they have reached the board’s limits. It lets riders know they need to lean back, slowing down.
Pushback causes the board’s nose to gradually lift, signalling that the rider should shift weight back to slow down.
The speed at which Pushback is enabled is determined by the speed the board can safely travel at, depending upon parameters such as charge levels, terrain, rider weight and tire pressure.
Future Motion claims that the devices will only nosedive when riders ignore or push through Pushback. However, according to OneWheel product liability lawsuits, the devices sometimes shut off during ordinary use, or Pushback notices aren’t noticeable to riders leading to nosedives.
When nosedives occur, the devices suddenly stop, ejecting riders off of the devices and leading to OneWheel skateboard injuries or even deaths.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report, from 2019 through 2021, at least four deaths occurred due to the devices, as well as multiple reports of OneWheel accident victims suffering severe injuries. The reported deaths resulted from trauma to the head.
Despite the findings by the CPSC, Future Motion, who makes OneWheel electric skateboards, failed to warn about the dangers associated with their devices and failed to recall the clearly defective devices which have caused fatal injuries.

OneWheel Skateboard Lawsuit Updates
October 1, 2025 Update
A lawsuit recently filed in Colorado state court alleges that a man was injured in a Onewheel electric skateboard crash, and that the skateboard’s creator was at fault because it failed to recall a product that it was aware was dangerous.
While a recall was eventually issued by Future Motion, Inc. in 2023, multiple lawsuits allege that the recall was too late.
In other news, there were 124 lawsuits in the OneWheel MDL as of September 2.
May 13, 2025 Update
There are currently 88 cases pending in the OneWheel MDL.
October 1, 2024 Update
Four cases were added to the OneWheel MDL in September, bringing the total number of cases to 88.

August 15, 2024 Update
The judge presiding over the OneWheel injury MDL has scheduled a pair of bellwether trials for April 6, 2026 and June 15, 2026. The trials will help parties get a feel for how juries might respond to testimony and evidence which will get repeated through dozens of cases.
Case-specific fact discovery will need to be completed by April 30, 2025. Bellwether expert discovery will need to be completed by September 30, 2025. Daubert motions will need to be filed by October 31, 2025, and responses and replies to Daubert motions will need to be filed by December 5 and 19, 2025, respectively.
July 17, 2024 Update
The judge presiding over the OneWheel MDL has dismissed some design defect claims, but has allowed claims for breach of implied warranty and misrepresentation to proceed. The judge has also given the plaintiffs 30 days to amend their complaint in order to address the design defect counts.
The design defect claims were dismissed because the court found that the plaintiffs failed to adequately allege a defect, since nosedives are effects of a defect rather than an independent defect. The judge said the plaintiffs identified multiple allegedly defective parts and failed to clearly identify which parts were defective. Attorneys for Future Motion had argued that the lack of specificity by the plaintiffs would have made discovery unmanageable and unwieldy.
Plaintiffs who were dismissed from the case will be able to rejoin following a proper filing.
June 4, 2024 Update
A lawsuit was filed last week which alleged that a man was riding on a OneWheel XR and it stopped suddenly, throwing him off the skateboard and onto the road. The accident allegedly led to an elbow dislocation requiring surgery, as well as multiple bones being broken in the elbow and forearm.
June 3, 2024 Update
10 cases were added to the OneWheel MDL in May, bringing the total to 65 cases.
May 1, 2024 Update
13 cases were added to the OneWheel MDL in April, bringing the total to 55 cases.
April 15, 2024 Update
A lawsuit was filed in Florida on Friday alleging that a man was riding a OneWheel Pint X when it unexpectedly and suddenly malfunctioned. The lawsuit alleges that the device was being operated normally when it abruptly shut off, nosediving and ejecting the man. The man allegedly fractured his heel and foot, leading to surgery and hardware implantation being necessary.
April 1, 2024 Update
One new case was added to the OneWheel MDL in March, bringing the total number of cases to 43.
March 13, 2024 Update
A lawsuit was filed on March 12 in Florida which alleges that Future Motion sold a defective and unreasonably dangerous product while failing to adequately disclose serious risks associated with the product.
The lawsuit alleges that a Florida man was riding a OneWheel in 2021 when it nosedived because of a defect, throwing him from the device and causing him to strike the ground, suffering substantial injuries.
September 29, 2023 Update
All models of OneWheel skateboards have been recalled by the CPSC because the skateboards may stop balancing riders, leading to death or injury.
August 11, 2022 Update
Future Motion has recalled footpads for OneWheel GT Electric Skateboards because they can fail to disengage after riders have dismounted, posing injury hazards to bystanders because the devices can continue to move after the riders have dismounted.
