Tesla Recall
On February 16, 2023, Tesla issued a recall of 362,758 vehicles due to problems with their FSD Beta software.
The vehicles included:
- Tesla Model Y 2020-2023
- Tesla Model X 2016-2023
- Tesla Model S 2016-2023

January 21, 2026 Update
A wrongful death lawsuit filed on December 2 in California by a California man’s daughters alleges that the man died after his Tesla Model Y crashed while using Autopilot and the electronic door handles malfunctioned, trapping him inside the vehicle while it burned.
The lawsuit alleges that the vehicle veered off the road suddenly, crashing into a tree while its Autopilot system was engaged.
According to the lawsuit, the lithium-ion battery of the vehicle ignited upon impact, leading to the car erupting into flames.
The man allegedly couldn’t escape because the vehicle’s electronic emergency exit systems and door locks failed, trapping him inside the vehicle.
The man allegedly died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries.
The lawsuit alleges the Autopilot system didn’t detect an object which was stationary in the roadway and failed to take evasive action or brake.
The complaint claims that the vehicle’s thermal management and battery containment systems are defectively designed, letting the battery enter thermal runaway.
The lawsuit claims that Tesla has long known that its batteries pose high fire risks in accidents.
The lawsuit notes that federal regulators have previously raised concerns about electronic doors not working when vehicle batteries fail, leading to a risk of entrapment during an emergency.
The lawsuit argues that Tesla knew or should have known about the risks because of past fatal accidents, regulatory investigations, internal testing and prior consumer complaints.
The lawsuit is accusing Tesla of overstating its Autopilot system’s capabilities.
December 30, 2025 Update
A new U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report suggests that current vehicle safety regulations need to be updated in order to account for an increase of self-driving cars on the roads of America.
The report warns that current safety and vehicle regulations, like those for steering wheels and brake pedals, don’t work for fully autonomous or self-driving vehicles.
The report states that vehicles like those that Waymo operates, along with systems that Tesla uses, rely not on human drivers but rather software and might lack conventional controls such as brake pedals or steering wheels, meaning that existing regulatory frameworks are a poor fit.
Officials in the NHTSA have determined that technical changes are needed to vehicle architecture rules and safety standards.
The report focused on 23 regulations which should be changed or updated, including electronic stability control and braking. As an example, self-driving cars can’t be tested on their braking capabilities when the cars are designed to avoid situations which would allow completion of the test.
November 5, 2025 Update
The NHTSA has increased scrutiny of the autonomous driving technology that Tesla uses. It has launched an investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems.
The NHTSA is investigating if FSD presents a safety risk to users of the road.
- Vehicles which are involved: Almost 2.9 vehicles with FSD systems.
- Areas of focus: System limitations, crash patterns, driver interaction and software behavior.
- Objective: Determine if the implementation or design of the FSD system violates federal safety standards or leads to unsafe driving.
