Why Are Polaris RZR Dangerous?
Polaris RZR ATV vehicles have been known to catch fire as the above video illustrates. A Polaris fire is a serious incident and there have been over 180 reported RZR fires, according to the New York Times. These fires have led Polaris recalls of the vehicles, and have resulted in serious injuries and even deaths.
Other reported issues with the Polaris vehicles include RZR rollover risks, and Polaris Ranger gas pedal problems.
Why Are RZR ATVs Catching On Fire?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) officials blamed the fires on a faulty fuel tank line which can be pinched, causing the tank to pressurize and leak fuel.
The New York Times reported that the RZR’s new ProStar engine could also be to blame for the fires. The ProStar’s exhaust header pipe, whose purpose it is to direct heat away from the pistons, lacks adequate airflow, according to mechanical engineer Mark Arndt. Arndt points out that the due to inadequate airflow, the exhaust creates a hot spot which can ignite leaking fuel, debris and plastic panels.

Customers, shortly after the new ProStar-powered RZRs hit the market, began reporting that plastic panels between passengers and the engine were melting and smoking. The company’s safety director, Kenneth de’Entremont, told Polaris in 2011 that a recall was necessary after he reviewed between eight and 15 reports of heat damage.
Polaris responded by telling Mr. d’Entremont that he had been excluded from future safety meetings and by issuing a service bulletin telling dealers to affix an aluminum sheet to damaged panels. Mr. d’Entremont left the company in 2012, saying about leaving the company, “It was no longer possible for me to continue working there ethically.”
