Tri-Union Seafoods has voluntarily recalled select lots of cans of tuna sold under the Trade Joe’s, H-E-B, Van Camp’s and Genova brand names. The reason for the recall is because the cans’ “easy open” pull tabs have a manufacturing defect which can compromise the product seal, allowing the food to be contaminated by clostridium botulinum. This can cause food poisoning which can be fatal.

Botulism
Botulism is potentially fatal and is caused by the botulinum toxin. This toxin is produced by a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum. The bacteria produce the toxin when they are exposed to certain temperatures and low levels of oxygen.
Botulinum toxin is composed of eight neurotoxins. It inhibits the nervous system’s ability to release acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter which allows motor neurons and muscle cells to communicate. This can lead to paralysis and eventually death via respiratory failure.
Common symptoms and signs of botulism include:
- Muscle weakness
- Difficulty swallowing
- Drooping eyelids
- Double vision
- Slurred speech
- Blurry vision
- Difficulty moving your eyes
- Difficulty breathing
Symptoms and signs of foodborne botulism may also include:
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Botulism is a medical emergency. Anyone with symptoms should go to a doctor or emergency room immediately.
