Uber Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Uber and Lyft are currently facing a number of lawsuits for things such as Lyft driver rape of passengers. Victims of sexual assault are alleging that Lyft “chooses to stonewall” law enforcement who investigate assaults.

The victims allege that Lyft’s background check policies are negligent, insufficient and that Lyft fails to adequately protect passengers with its technology. The victims claim Lyft chooses to “hide and conceal” the scope of its “sexual predator crisis” on Lyft.

Many of the victims say Lyft has been largely unresponsive when they reported assaults to Lyft. Lyft is being accused of allowing a driver to continue to work for the company after a female passenger reported to Lyft and the police that the driver sexually assaulted her.

Many sexual assault victims have apparently been told by detectives that Lyft is often unresponsive to the detectives’ requests, and victims suing Lyft claim Lyft does not proactively report sexual assault incidents to the police.

Sexually Assaulted By Uber Driver

Uber was sued in June 2017 by a woman who claimed she was a victim of Uber rape after Uber ignored warnings about the criminal history of the driver. A more recent Uber sexual assault lawsuit claims that while Uber markets itself as a designated driving service, women who use Uber after drinking are at “peculiar risk” of suffering sexual assaults at the hands of Uber drivers. CNN has reported on the pattern of women using ridesharing services at night after drinking and then being sexually assaulted by ridesharing drivers.

How Many Uber Drivers Have Assaulted Passengers?

Approximately 103 Uber drivers and 18 Lyft drivers have been accused of sexual assault or sexual abuse, according to a 2018 CNN report. The Denver Police Department reported that there were 43 reported sex crimes in Denver by ridesharing drivers from 2015 to July 2019, according to NPR. The police said that there were only 13 reported sexual assaults involving taxi drivers during that same period.

We believe that the number of Uber sexual assaults are underreported, especially in light of the startling statistics provided by the Denver Police Department. If you were a victim of rape, sexual assault or sexual abuse while a driver or passenger of Uber, Lyft or another ridesharing service, immediately call 1-800-718-4658 to speak with an Uber Sexual Assault Lawsuit  Attorney at Nadrich & Cohen. Has An Uber Driver Ever Kidnapped Anyone?

Police report that an Uber driver in Pittsburgh, PA was charged with false imprisonment and kidnapping after he attempted to lock two female passengers in his car, telling them, “you’re not going anywhere.”  According to officials, another rideshare driver was recently charged with kidnapping and rape after picking a woman up in Van Nuys, California in 2018.

Female Ridesharing Drivers At Risk

Female ridesharing drivers are at risk for sexual assault, too. “There really isn’t anything that can keep you safe,” a female Uber driver wrote. “I am operating a vehicle that weighs over 4,000 pounds, in a confined space, with my back to passengers — not an ideal situation to defend yourself.”
