Kidney Failure, Ketoacidosis and Amputation Risk Associated With Invokana Use

The prescription drug side effect attorneys of Nadrich & Cohen Accident Injury Lawyers, are currently investigating Invokana, Invokamet, and Invokamet XR side effect claims. Our law firm is pursuing claims on behalf of individuals who have been diagnosed with ketoacidosis, suffered kidney failure or developed Necrotizing Fasciitis while using Invokana, Invokamet, and Invokamet XR.

Ketoacidosis, also known as acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), is a condition that causes the body to produce excessive levels of acids in the bloodstream and can lead to diabetic coma or death. Invokana and Invokamet are part of a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and are prescribed to diabetics in order to lower blood sugar levels.

FDA Alert: Necrotizing Fasciitis Reported In Patients Using SGL2 Inhibitors

On August 29, 2018, an FDA Alert was released which detailed reports of Necrotizing Fasciitis, a serious medical condition, in SGL2 users. The condition can require surgery, result in severe disfigurement or death. While rare, this condition affects a patient’s genital area. The FDA alert reports symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis to include “tenderness, redness, or swelling of the genitals or the area from the genitals back to the rectum, a fever above 100.4 F, or a general feeling of being unwell.” SGL2 patients experiencing any of these symptoms should immediately seek medical treatment as this condition rapidly progresses.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Necrotizing Fasciitis while taking an SGL2 inhibitor, immediately contact the Invokana attorneys at Nadrich & Cohen for a free case evaluation. It will not cost you a penny for our attorneys to evaluate your case. We are available to answer all of your questions. Our lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, which means that it will never cost you a penny out of pocket for us to represent you. We only collect a fee if a recovery is made. 2015 FDA Alert For Invokana Kidney Failure and Ketoacidosis Side Effects

On May 5th, 2015, the Food and Drug Administration issued a public advisory alert that the above drugs and other SGLT2 medications can place users at risk for kidney failure and/or ketoacidosis. Our lawyers want to speak with victims, who have been injured while taking one of these drugs. We aim to hold the drug manufacturers financially accountable for what they have done.

The public FDA Advisory Alert warned of ketoacidosis symptoms, namely:

  • Fatigue and sleepiness
  • Confusion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Instability or nausea
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Kidney failure

Ketoacidosis typically develops slowly, but the onset can be very rapid if the patient begins vomiting. A Ketoacidosis diagnosis is confirmed by a lab test. For Type II diabetes, diabetics with blood sugar levels exceeding 240 mg/dl, it is recommended that ketones levels in urine be tested at least every six hours. There are test strips available for use by patients at home. If you do find abnormal levels of ketones in your body, you should contact your healthcare provider right away and avoid any type of exercise.

In severe cases, hospitalization may be required to treat ketoacidosis. Treatment of ketoacidosis involves administration of fluids and insulin to combat dehydration and help your body’s glucose levels return to normal.

Ketoacidosis is rare in those who have Type II diabetes, but 20 adverse events have so far been reported to the FDA. The adverse event reports were submitted by users who suffered serious side effects and were hospitalized after taking SGLT2 drugs, including Invokana and Invokamet. No deaths have been reported due to the use of either of these drugs, but the danger does exist. It’s important that patients understand the potential side effects of these drugs, and know the symptoms of ketoacidosis and kidney failure so that they may seek out early medical treatment and intervention.

If you or a loved one suffered kidney failure, ketoacidosis or Necrotizing Fasciitis while taking Invokana, Invokamet, or one of the above drugs, contact us immediately for a free, confidential case evaluation.

Our lawyers only collect a fee, if they make a recovery. If no settlement is recovered, nothing is owed. There are strict time limitations in which a claim must be made. Contact us today for a free consultation.
