Trident Tritanium Acetabular System Failures
The Tritanium Acetabular Cup is implanted into hip sockets during hip replacement surgeries. It is designed to cause bone marrow growth which holds it in place inside the body.
Two versions of the cup are made by Stryker: a primary cup and a revision cup.
Multiple studies published in 2017, June 2018, and November 2018 have found that those given the primary cup see higher loosening rates than those given the revision cup. The studies found that this is because the primary cup fails to cause enough bone marrow growth to hold the cup in place. The June 2018 study found this was likely caused by the pore structure and binding agent used in the primary cup. That study found that using additional screws to hold the cup in place may not cause the risk of cup loosening to decrease.
One study found that about 40% of patients given the primary cup showed signs of possible cup loosening, and another study found that about 60% of patients given the primary cup showed signs of possible cup loosening, compared to just 0.8% of patients given the revision cup.
Strkyer posted study results in November 2017 on clinicaltrials.gov which showed a revision rate of 2.43%. However, well over half of those in the study failed to complete the study, including eight cup removals/revisions which were removed for the study without explanation, as well as 15 deaths, 20 withdrawals, and 31 subjects terminated.
